WHERE FIVE CENTURIES OF HISTORY BEGIN AT YOUR DOORSTEP

The Lisbon Melaka is located in the Portuguese Settlement — known locally as Kampung Portugis — a community whose roots trace back to 1511, when the Portuguese fleet under Alfonso de Albuquerque captured Melaka and established one of the earliest European footholds in Asia. The descendants of those settlers, the Kristang people, have lived here for over 500 years, preserving a unique Creole language, Catholic faith, and seafood-rich cuisine that you will find nowhere else in the world.

Melaka itself was already a legend long before the Portuguese arrived. Founded around 1400 by the Malay prince Parameswara, it grew into the greatest trading port in Asia — a crossroads where Arab, Indian, Chinese, and Malay merchants exchanged spices, silks, and gold. That layered heritage earned Melaka its UNESCO World Heritage inscription in 2008, recognising over 80 cultural landmarks across the city's historic core.

From our doorstep, every one of those landmarks is within easy reach — the fortress ruins of A Famosa, the colonial grandeur of Dutch Square, the living street culture of Jonker Street, and the quiet beauty of the Melaka River at dusk. History here is not behind glass. It is all around you.

Portuguese Square

LIVING CULTURE · ON OUR DOORSTEP
The cultural heart of our neighbourhood. The Kristang community — descendants of 16th-century Portuguese settlers — have preserved their Creole language, Catholic faith, and Eurasian cuisine here for over 500 years. On weekends and during the Festa San Pedro in June, the square comes alive with traditional folk dances and live music.

A Famosa

COLONIAL HERITAGE · ~8 MIN BY CAR
Built by the Portuguese in 1511, A Famosa is one of the oldest surviving European structures in Southeast Asia. Only the iconic Porta de Santiago gatehouse remains today, its stone arch bearing the carved crest of the Dutch East India Company — a symbol of Melaka's successive colonial rulers.

St. Paul’s Hill & Church

COLONIAL HERITAGE · ~8 MIN BY CAR
Above A Famosa stand the roofless walls of St. Paul's Church, first built as a Portuguese chapel in 1521. Its weathered ruins frame one of the finest panoramic views in Melaka — across the rooftops, the Straits, and on a clear day, the distant shores of Sumatra.

The Stadthuys

CULTURAL LANDMARK · ~10 MIN BY CAR
Built between 1641 and 1660, the deep-red Stadthuys is considered the oldest Dutch building in the East. Now home to the Museum of History and Ethnography, it anchors Dutch Square — the most iconic scene in Melaka, surrounded by Christ Church, colonial fountains, and colourful trishaws.

Christ Church Melaka

COLONIAL HERITAGE · ~10 MIN BY CAR
Completed in 1753, Christ Church is one of the oldest functioning Protestant churches in Malaysia. Its flame-red facade dominates Dutch Square. Step inside to find 200-year-old single-timber pews, ornate fanlights, and plaques honouring the Dutch soldiers and settlers who shaped this city.

Maritime Museum (Flor de la Mar)

MARITIME HISTORY · ~10 MIN BY CAR
Built as a replica of the Portuguese carrack Flor de la Mar, which sank in 1511 carrying Melaka's treasures, this ship-shaped museum tells the story of the city's golden age as the greatest trading port in Asia. A fitting visit for guests of The Lisbon Melaka.

Melaka River Cruise

SCENIC EXPERIENCE · ~10 MIN BY CAR
A 45-minute boat journey past muralled walls, colonial warehouses, and Peranakan shophouses. The evening cruise, when buildings are softly illuminated and the river mirrors their warm glow, is one of the most atmospheric ways to experience the heart of this UNESCO city.

Jonker Street

STREET CULTURE · ~10 MIN BY CAR
By day, a treasure trove of antique shops, Peranakan boutiques, and artisan stalls. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, Jonker Street transforms into one of Malaysia's most beloved night markets — street food, live music, cultural performances, and the full energy of Melaka's old town.

Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum

CULTURAL MUSEUM · ~10 MIN BY CAR
Housed in a Peranakan townhouse belonging to the Chan family since 1861, this museum offers a window into the rich world of Straits Chinese culture. Guided tours lead through gilded furniture, hand-painted tiles, and carved ancestral halls — remarkably, still conducted by the Chan family today.

Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum

ROYAL HISTORY · ~9 MIN BY CAR
A timber reconstruction of the original 15th-century royal palace, built without a single metal nail. Inside, vivid dioramas depict the court life and rituals of the Melaka Sultanate at the height of its power — when this city commanded the most important trade route in the world.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

SACRED HERITAGE · ~10 MIN BY CAR
Malaysia's oldest functioning Chinese temple, dating to 1646. Every beam, tile, and carving was imported from China. Dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, its peaceful courtyards offer a serene contrast to the nearby bustle of Jonker Street. A UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award winner in 2003.

Melaka Straits Mosque

ARCHITECTURAL MARVEL · ~15 MIN BY CAR
Built on a man-made island, the Melaka Straits Mosque appears to float on the water at high tide — one of the most striking sights in the state. Its golden dome, 30-metre minaret, and stained-glass archways blend Malay and Middle Eastern styles in spectacular fashion.
All of these landmarks are within easy reach of The Lisbon Melaka, making us the ideal base for your stay in this extraordinary UNESCO city.
